Grey’s Anatomy: biology lessons have never been this much fun

Grey’s Anatomy is entertaining and educational – well it is a medical drama named after a textbook now in its 41st edition!

I am now straggeringly well-informed about a number of medical terms – and you can be too. Oh would all my school biology lessons have been such fun and so informative! Perhaps I should consider becoming a doctor now I’ve watched so much. It’ll be a doddle.

The show stars “sweet girl” Meredith Grey – she really is lovely – who has just started her intern year at Seattle Grace Hospital. She is joined by Izzie Stevens, George O’Malley and Christina Yang who all have to fight for their dignity and to establish their reputation among a pack of snarky senior doctors.

Confesssion: I have sat in my room for hours on end binge watching the 15 seasons of “Grey’s”. And, remained excited throughout. I fell in love with the show by the end of the short 9 episode first season. I couldn’t stop myself.

Its the relationships that make it for me. They’re not easy to explain but I love Meredith’s weird relationship with super-tougth Christina and how insecure ex-model Izzie interplays with George’s super sweet nature.

These characters become like family but in the 15 seasons many of my favourite characters keep leaving! They die or leave for mysterious reasons. Argh. But then they just bring in another character who oozes instant attraction. Like Arizona Robbins, sometimes described as “quirky” and “perky”, who arrives in season five to save kiddies in surgery.

Show creator Shonda Rhimes said “Grey’s is more than just entertainment” – and it is. It shows you how personalities can be so varied and make life so interesting – it reminds you why you love all your odd friends and family. And this show gave me people who I felt I knew on a personal level.

It made me cry, then laugh, then get angry, then be disappointed. Then repeat these in a mixed up sequence. And again. You get the picture.

The impact of this show on me first really hit home at the end of season 5. No spoilers, but another confession: I cried buckets of tears. It made me think about many personal things.

Get hooked, cry, laugh, get some new friends, appreciate your old ones.
